The Alverio Family Reunion

Last summer (2009) my cousins and I planned our second family reunion.  It was celebrated in the town of San Lorenzo where my mom is from.  Alverio is my mom's maternal last name, in other words my grandma's (may she RIP).  Family from different parts of Puerto Rico, Chicago, and New Jersey attended the reunion.  It was a very happy occasion.  We danced, ate, drank, played pool, and cooled off in the swimming pool.  The best part was being able to catch up, laugh, and be together as a family on a happy occasion.  My sister and cousin prepared a photo album of my great great grandmother and her descendants. A total of 7 generations!  It was great...I got to see a picture of my great great grandmother.  Someone found a newspaper article about her.  She was the oldest person living at that time.  In addition, my nephew made a moviemaker that made us laugh and at times brought tears to our eyes. He did a wonderful job.  I think family reunions are important to celebrate because they bring family members closer to each other and you get to learn about your roots.  If your family has never done one, try it.  It's a lot of work, but it's worth it.  Here are a few pictures of the reunion so you can see how much fun we had.  Enjoy!

Pork anyone?

  6. Hello Professor, I've never been to a family reunion, but looking at your pictures it looks like you can have a really good time. Maybe one day I would try to make my own :0), My question is:
How did you feel when you saw the picture of your great great grandmother, and find out that she was one of the oldes person living at that time, knowing that this days is hard to find people that pass the 90 years old?

  7. @ jsmwilliam: Thanks. The pork was one of the highlights of the day. Everyone wanted to take pictures with it. LOL! We had a wonderful time and hope we can have another one soon. We did it on a Saturday. The next day some of us went to the beach but everyone was tired. :D

@Francelis: It was exciting to see family members we hadn’t seen in a long time and get to know some that we didn’t, mostly the kids.

@Luis Vega: We started in 2008 with an informal one. This one from the summer of 2009 was a little bit more organized. This year we haven’t done it. Maybe next year.

@ Gene Anthony: I didn’t understand your question. Be careful with the translator. “Raisins” are “pasas de comer” in Spanish. Please, rewrite your question so I can answer it.

@Jeannette: If I understood your question, what I liked most was seeing the moviemaker prepared by my nephew. We laughed and cried and got to learn about our family members and our roots.

@Imelda: Seeing that picture was just awesome. A feeling I can’t describe. I never thought by having a family reunion I would get to know something about her. In my family there have been quite a few over the age of 90. I got to know my great grandmother. My grandma passed away at the age of 93. So longevity runs in the family.
